Asset Tag

IT Asset Management

Certificate of Destruction (CoD)

A formal document provided by a certified e-waste recycler that verifies data-bearing devices (such as hard drives, SSDs, and mobile phones) have been securely and permanently destroyed. This document is critical for businesses that need to demonstrate compliance with data protection regulations like HIPAA, FERPA, or SOX.

Chain of Custody

The documented, chronological record of the handling, transfer, and location of e-waste materials from the point of collection to final processing. A secure chain of custody ensures that electronic assets are tracked and accounted for at every stage, preventing unauthorized access or data breaches.

CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)

E-Waste

An older display technology used in bulky computer monitors and televisions. CRTs contain lead and other hazardous materials, making them a regulated e-waste item that must be recycled by a certified facility and cannot be sent to a landfill.

Data Sanitization

The process of deliberately, permanently, and irreversibly removing or destroying data stored on a memory device. Unlike simple deletion, which only removes file pointers, data sanitization makes data completely unrecoverable using any known technology. Methods include overwriting, degaussing, and physical destruction.

Degaussing

Data Security

A method of data destruction that uses a powerful magnetic field to erase data from magnetic storage media such as hard disk drives (HDDs) and magnetic tapes. Degaussing renders the storage device permanently unusable and the data unrecoverable.

A third-party company that receives processed e-waste materials (such as sorted plastics, metals, or circuit boards) from a primary recycler for further refining or recycling. R2 certification requires recyclers to vet and audit their downstream vendors to ensure materials are handled responsibly.

E-Waste (Electronic Waste)

Discarded electrical or electronic devices and equipment. Common examples include computers, laptops, monitors, printers, cell phones, servers, cables, and peripherals. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)

The United States federal agency responsible for environmental protection, including the regulation of hazardous waste disposal. The EPA sets guidelines for the safe handling and recycling of electronic waste under laws such as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).

EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility)

Regulation

An environmental policy approach in which a producer's responsibility for a product is extended to the post-consumer stage of its lifecycle, including its collection, recycling, and final disposal. Several US states have EPR laws requiring electronics manufacturers to fund recycling programs.

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)

Regulation

A US federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Schools and educational institutions that dispose of IT equipment containing student data must ensure that data is securely destroyed in compliance with FERPA before recycling.

Hard Drive Shredding

Data Security

The physical destruction of a hard drive by an industrial shredder that cuts the device into small, unrecoverable pieces. Hard drive shredding is the most secure method of data destruction and is recommended for devices containing highly sensitive or classified information.

Waste that poses a substantial or potential threat to public health or the environment. Many electronic components are classified as hazardous waste due to the presence of substances like lead (in CRT monitors and solder), mercury (in LCD backlights), cadmium (in batteries), and brominated flame retardants (in circuit boards).

A US federal law that establishes national standards for the protection of sensitive patient health information (PHI). Healthcare organizations must ensure that all electronic devices containing PHI are securely sanitized or destroyed before disposal, with documented proof of destruction.

ITAD (IT Asset Disposition)

The process of disposing of obsolete or unwanted IT equipment in a safe, secure, and environmentally responsible manner. A comprehensive ITAD program includes data destruction, asset tracking, remarketing of reusable equipment, and certified recycling of end-of-life materials.

The set of business practices that involves managing and optimizing the purchase, deployment, maintenance, utilization, and disposal of IT assets within an organization. ITAM ensures that assets are tracked throughout their entire lifecycle.

Landfill Diversion

The leading global standard for the electronics recycling industry, now in its third version (R2v3). R2 certification requires recyclers to meet rigorous standards for environmental responsibility, worker health and safety, data security, and accountability in the management of used electronics. It is administered by SERI (Sustainable Electronics Recycling International).

RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act)

A US federal law that governs the disposal of solid and hazardous waste. Under RCRA, businesses are responsible for ensuring that their hazardous waste, including certain types of e-waste, is properly managed from generation to final disposal (known as 'cradle-to-grave' responsibility).

The process of recovering valuable raw materials from electronic waste.
